What happens in PE?
PE Activities

Our PE classes are not like the ones you might have had in school.  We are health-based program with an emphasis on building strong fitness and nutrition habits.  We will discuss and practice:

- Workouts that incorporate cardio, weight lifting, and body weight exercises.  We use heart rate monitors to measure intensity and effort.

- Yoga (occasionally)

- And cooperative and competitive games

Grading Policies
Grading Policies

Our grades are simple but not easy.  This is an effort based class that is developed to improve  the fitness of the individual student, regardless of athleticism or previous experience.  There is no single mile time that every student needs to achieve.  There is no number of push-ups needed to earn an A for the report card.  Instead, we grade based on improvement rates.  Similar to other subjects, the more time that the student puts in (whether in or out of class), the higher their grade will be.  Below you will find some standard grading policies that we use to develop the cumulative grade for PE:

- Mile run is a major test grade similar to a Unit Test in other classes, and is weighted 10% of the grading period (3x the amount of any other physical activity).  It will be run approximately once every 4-6 weeks.  There should be around 3-5% improvement between mile runs (or 0.67% per week).  The grade is based on a mathematical formula developed by an Algebra teacher in collaboration with Coach Stallard, and takes into account the original run speed, the number of weeks since the 1st run, and weather during the run.  If poor performance occurs, the student has 2 weeks to re-run and replace the previous time and grade.

- Nutrition activities only occur 1x per week.  These include weekly in-class notes, quizzes, exit tickets as well as occasional homework.  There is one major unit test at the end of each semester.

- Yoga is a participation grade.  It not graded on ability or flexibility - only willingness to try and effort given.

- Character Development grades are heavily influenced by uniform compliance, but also includes team building activities, self-tracking and more.  This is a daily grade, that when combined for the week, is equivalent to one day of physical activity.

- Workout grades and grades on game days compose the bulk of our grades.  These grades are based on the amount of time spent the student spends in the Target Heart Rate Zone.  In order to earn points toward their grade for the day, the student must work hard enough to make their heart beat at 70% of their individual maximum.  On a full class day, 20 minutes of at least 70% or above earns a grade of 70.  30 minutes earns a 100.  For more information, look in the "Polar GoFit (Student Participation)" section.

Any make-up work should be accomplished within 2 weeks after the return to class.
